    WHAT IS INDIVIDUAL TAX NUMBER (ITN)?

     

    Individual Tax Number is a nine-digit number issued to Non- Resident individuals who need an identification number but who are not eligible to obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

     

    WHO NEEDS TO APLLY FOR ITN?

     

    The individuals who does not have or not eligible to obtain a SIN but need to provide an individual tax number to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA):

     

    • an international students who is without a work permit and has to file or intends to file a Canadian Income Tax Return 

    • a non-resident filing an application to waive or reduce Canadian withholding tax

    • a non-resident disposing of taxable Canadian property; or

    • a non-resident who has to file or intends to file a Canadian income tax return

    • a non-resident who has to file or intends to file Canadian Income tax return for election under section 21 

     

    WHEN YOU NEED TO APPLY FOR ITN?

     

    As soon as you meet the requirements described under “Who Needs To Apply For ITN”  section. CRA will provide in writing your ITN. If you don’t receive you ITN  at the end of the six-week period, you can call and ask for status.

     

     

    HOW TO APPLY?

     

    • Complete T1261 form correctly

    • Indicate the reason you are applying for ITN

    • Provide supporting certified documents: The document (s) you provide must be current and must verify your identity. The documents must include your name, date of birth and photograph. Documents that are photocopied MUST be verified by local officials such as doctors, lawyers, teachers or officials I a federal department or  a provincial ministry.

     

    CRA will NOT accept any photocopies that have not been certified.

     

    All original documents that you submit will return to you but will not return copies of documents.

     

    SOLE PROPRIETORS

     

    If you are a sole proprietor, you MAY also have to apply for a Business number.
